Travelling through Ecuador you really should visit the small Andean town of Otavalo in the northern part of the country. Not just for its world famous market, that occupies the center of town on Saturdays (well, actually, every day, but on Saturdays it’s large), but also for its colourful culture, its friendly people, its relaxed ambience and the many attractions that hide in the beautiful green province of Imbabura. The majestic mountains, its many lakes, fascinating villages and towns where you can buy artefacts directly from the producers.

A nice and comfortable base to visit these attractions is our Dutch owned hotel Doña Esther, perfectly located in the center of town, near the central park - Parque Bolívar - and very close to the Saturday market.

In 1996/1997 the hotel was reconstructed, to adapt it to modern times, but without loosing its rustic, colonial style of the past. The result: a hotel with a unique ambience - a soul with 12 rooms and a penthouse situated around a green inner courtyard. All the rooms have a private bathroom, hot water 24 hours a day and “the best shower of Latin America”, like some of our clients told us. |

In our restaurant Árbol de Montalvo we serve mainly Mediterranean dishes, but of course we could not do without the typical Ecuadorian dishes of the region.

In the front part of the hotel you’ll also find a little shop that sells handicrafts you won’t easily find in town, of which revenue 20% will be donated to a social project in or outside of Otavalo. Besides that there’s a book exchange/sale. |
